I recently posted about my trip to see the Opera "Romeo and Juliette". Since then I've had a few friends tell me about their experiences of going to the symphony concerts recently. I think they were surprised at how much they enjoyed it. In each case the orchestra was local and my friends were pleased that they were very talented and accomplished.
The overall quality of musicianship has risen over the years. Today we can expect to find terrific musicians living next door. When we go to a local bar we can hear bands that are excellent and know that we are going to have a good time. I know many musicians that have spent time on the road and are now settled down with families and would like to be a part of their community.
I routinely recommend that people support their local musicians. Sometimes I think that the general reaction is that I'm asking for charity. Nothing could be further from the truth. Typically the local folks are awesome and give a great show. You are going to have a good time.
While I could ramble on about the music business for a much longer time, it's important to note that there are local artists who also do wonderful work. Do you want to step up your game and decorate your house or office in a very personal way. Go to a local art gallery and purchase an original painting or ceramic piece. Yep it's going to cost you more than that mass produced thing from Indonesia that you found at the big-box store, but I'm pretty sure that you will like it a lot more and you can pass it on to your heirs.
Many local artisans hand make one-of-a-kind jewelry too. Instead of a trademarked piece from a national chain, you can wear something unique, beautiful, and (I'm guessing here) more affordable. Maybe you can even wear it when you attend a performance at your local community theater.
If you find yourself complaining that there's nothing to do in your area, consider supporting the few things that are happening. Many colleges have student productions and concert/recitals happening and they do a terrible job of promoting them. Try to get on a mailing list or visit their website for information. They would love to have you attend, they're just not very good at getting the word out.
When you support your local art scene you are enhancing your life more than theirs. When you drag your kids or grandkids along you expose them to something better than the pop culture they are awash in. You also elevate the overall quality of life in your community.
Art is not just London or New York. It's next door or in a neighboring community. With summer coming there will be outdoor art shows, craft shows, and music concerts. Take it all in.
