While talent is something you are born with, skill is something learned and developed. Although many believe that I am a talented musician, I assure you I am not. I am however skillful. I have worked and continue to work very hard to maintain my ability to play.
I have had many adult students over the years tell me that they were not "musically inclined" or that they had no talent. My response is always the same. It doesn't matter. You can play well if you just develop some basic skills. In many cases talent doesn't manifest itself until some skill is developed anyway, so there really is no way to be certain without making the attempt.
I've taught many talented children over the years and they rarely last. Learning and playing music, it seems, is too easy for them. They don't have any respect for the process. The kids who have to work for it are the ones who appreciate it the most. That makes sense when you think about it. Typically they also make the most progress and become the better guitarists.
The fun thing about skill development is there seems to be no end in sight. There is always something new and interesting to learn. Someone told me years ago that there are a limited number of techniques to learn on the guitar. Mathematically that may be true but the great 20th century guitarist Andre Segovia once said that it would take a minimum of two life times to master them.
Watching skill and talent converge is a real treat. In every art discipline there are some amazing examples. As a guitarist I can name several, like Andre Segovia, Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix and others. A variety of other musicians in every other genre also come to mind.
I am also reminded of an early painting by Pablo Picasso that I once saw. It was a very traditional painting that showed all of the basic skills of depicting human form and its surroundings. A far cry from the art he is best known for. He didn't paint that way because he lacked skill. Rather he took his amazing skill and, through the force of his talent, expanded into areas the rest of us didn't know existed.
For the rest of us, we can focus on developing our skills and enjoying the ability to create or recreate art to varying degrees. For those who believe they are untalented I say again, "It doesn't matter". Just play, learn, and enjoy.
